Design & Development Manager
New York, New York
NYC-based fashion house specializing in couture and ready-to-wear is seeking a dynamic Design and Development Manager to oversee the design team and streamline cross-functional operations across production, technical, and the executive team. This is a new leadership role—ideal for someone who comes from a better apparel brand and who can confidently lead a small, high-performing team.
This is not a design-centric role, but rather one who can lead and understands the language of fashion and can keep people, timelines, and creative output in sync. Strong communication, patternmaking knowledge, and management skills are essential.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage sample room workflow, ensuring timely distribution of work and accuracy in seasonal pattern documentation
Oversee all inventories, including fabric sourcing and master inventory maintenance
Act as point of contact for internal teams—Design, Atelier, Sales, and Production—to ensure smooth order flow and clear communication
Coordinate and track couture and bridal orders, working closely with the Couture Manager to meet delivery deadlines
Lead fittings and maintain timelines for client appointments and seasonal collection reviews
Supervise prep for photoshoots, runway shows, and backstage processes during events
Maintain all design documentation including spec books, PO logs, embroidery records, and client order files
Contribute to a positive studio culture and provide daily structure to a lean but growing team
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum 5 years of experience in a atelier or couture studio, ideally across multiple roles (sample room, fittings, fabric sourcing, client service)
Deep technical knowledge of pattern making, construction, and embroidery (design background not required)
Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a small team with positivity and clarity
Experience working directly with private clients and maintaining a polished, service-oriented approach
PROVEN organizational, scheduling, and communication skills
Confidence interacting with senior leadership and designers
Flexible availability—occasional evenings and weekends required during busy cycles
