Agency Recruiter vs. In-House Recruiter: What’s the Difference?
If you’re hiring, you’ve probably asked yourself: Should we handle this search internally, or bring in a recruiting agency?
There’s no universal right answer. Both can be valuable. It really comes down to what the company needs, how specialized the role is, and how much bandwidth the internal team has.
In-house recruiting
An in-house recruiter has one major advantage: proximity.
They know the company, the culture, the hiring managers, and what makes someone successful within the organization. That context is incredibly valuable, especially for companies hiring consistently.
The challenge is bandwidth. Internal recruiters are often juggling multiple roles and priorities, so a particularly specialized, urgent, or difficult search may not get the attention it needs.
That’s where an agency can help.
What an agency recruiter brings
The biggest difference is often focus.
When an agency takes on a search, that recruiter is focused specifically on finding the right person for that role. They’re sourcing, networking, reaching out to passive candidates, screening, managing the process, and staying close to both the client and candidate. And they’re looking outside the company.
Some of the strongest candidates aren't actively applying to jobs. They’re already working somewhere else and may only consider a new opportunity if the right one comes along. A good recruiter knows how to find and engage those people.
The best agency recruiters also bring perspective beyond the candidate pool. Because they’re constantly recruiting within a specific industry, they have a pulse on the market. They can tell a client when a search is too narrow, compensation isn't competitive, or the ideal candidate profile may need to change.
Sometimes the problem isn't that there aren't good candidates. It’s that the search is looking for the wrong candidate.
Sometimes, you need both.
A strong internal recruiting team and a strong agency recruiter can work extremely well together. The internal team brings company knowledge and long-term perspective. The agency brings additional bandwidth, market knowledge, and access to a broader network.
The key is partnership. An agency can find great candidates, but the client still needs to provide clear direction and timely feedback. Likewise, an internal recruiter can identify the perfect person, but if the interview process moves too slowly, that candidate may be gone.
Recruiting works best when everyone is moving in the same direction.
At PRTNR, we don't believe an agency should replace your internal recruiting team. We believe we should make them better.
We bring an outside perspective, expand the search, challenge assumptions when necessary, and help our clients connect with people they may not have found on their own. Because hiring isn't about who gets the credit for finding the candidate. It’s about finding the right one.
